Styling a Human Hair Wig

Human Hair Wigs can be difficult as they do need styling after each wash. Synthetic hair wigs are treated so they bounce back in to shape after each wash. Choosing between a synthetic or human hair wig is a personal preference. Some people just love the feel and look of human hair wigs while others do not.

At Wigs Online we deal with Jon Renau as one of our suppliers of human hair wigs. The quality of their wigs are unsurpassable. I read an article on their blog this morning and thought it had some great points to remember when styling your human hair wig.

There are a few tips that should be kept in mind when styling a human hair wig:

Always wash the wig with a good quality shampoo and conditioner. At Wigs Online we have a specially formulated Shampoo, Conditioner and Argan oil.

Do not rub the hair so hard to tangle the fibres. Just blot with a towel the excess water.

Always use a wide tooth comb and start gently combing from the bottom of the hair.

Style the hair in sections using only a moderate heat. Not too much heat.

Use the cool button on your hair dryer if you have one.

If you need to use a flat iron use a heat protector spray on the hair before you start blowdrying the hair.

As a follow one to our article last week about the different brands we stock, we would like to discuss a little bit more about each brand. This week we will start with Forever Young. It is a LA based label that has been producing wigs and hair pieces for over 30 years. Forever young cater for hi fashion conscious clientele at affordable prices. You receive an invite and it’s a costume party. Some people just love to dress up and then those who just find it all too hard. Have some fun with it. Hopefully these ideas will put the fun back into a costume party. Here are some ideas to help:

Wigs by themes:

Jungle Theme

Why not grab a Wild wig to be a jungle cave man or woman. They come in great assortment of colours. With a leopard print dress a cave women will evolve. And for the men, just add some baggy old dirty clothes and the cave man is your look.

Pirates – Ahoy

When we think of pirates Jonny Depp comes to mind with his dreadlock looking and red head band. Just like the pirate wig. Or the Pony tail Warrior from some of the classics like Mulan or Aladdin.

Circus

A circus theme can be so much fun. There is always the classic clown. A red nose, bright coloured make up, shoes and clothes and you are set to go. The costume would not be complete with out a white afro to match. Or something like the Queen of hearts will look like you came straight back from the Mad Hatters party.

Egyptian theme

The Egypitian theme is full of gold, toga style clothes and a black wig with ornamental head band and the occasional plait in the hair. The Nile Queen would be a perfect fit.

Colonial

Colonial times can be anything between the 16^th Century and the 20th Century. It was back when synthetic fibres didn’t really exist. Clothes were made of cotton and linen. Wigs were worn by many. Men wear white wigs and ladies wore wigs with long ringlets and big styles. Why not try a Colonial man wig or a New Z? With the wig and a linen shirt and jodpur type pants the man is done. Ladies wore petticoats and long flowing dresses.

1920s

Fashion in the 1920s was the beginning of modern clothing. Men and women alike started to dress a little more casual than the restricted undergarment like a girdle. It is often referred to as the roaring 20s. And of course our Roaring 20s wig is just perfect, as well as Lanar and Marilyn.

1980s

The 1980s was a fun time for fashion. Clothes and fashion accessories were bright and colourful. Shoulder pads were big. Hair styles were generally big, bouffant and heavily styled. Lots of gel and hair spray were absolutely essential. And for men sideburns were all the go. Big hair styles were also fashionable for men just like the women. Shows like Dynasty, Magnum PI and Charlies Angels were just some of the favorites and many took their hair style from these celebrities. And of course for the men big moustaches like Magnum were definetly in fashion. The Punky, and Farrah Fawcett, are just a couple wigs that come to mind.

Why Do People wear Wigs.

WHY DO I NEED A WIG – THE REASON FOR YOUR PURCHASE

Chemo Therapy
If you are undergoing Chemo Therapy and need a wig for the impending loss of hair, don’t despair as often hair loss from Chemo Therapy is often short term and your hair starts to grow back after the treatment ends.

An important thing to remember in this case is that you have many other things to deal with while undergoing Chemo Therapy, so you preferably want a wig that is easy to wear and care for and hence does not require a great deal of time to wash and style. For this reason Synthetic wigs are great as they can be worn out of the box and require little styling after washing.

As mentioned the need for a wig in this case is not usually long term so spending considerably more on a Human hair wig is not necessary and doing so would be purely a personal choice. If you do choose to buy a Human hair wig, understand that although you will have the benefits of a slightly more realistic look and being able to style your wig, you will have to put up with the considerable extra time and effort that is needed to maintain a Human hair wig.

As for style and colour it is often best to stick close to wigs that are similar to your current hairstyle and colour as a drastic change in either can be difficult to get used to and will only draw attention to you from family and friends. And although the attention is not a problem you most likely don’t feel like repeating the whole situation over and over each time.

Permanent Hair loss
Many people who suffer long term hair loss for whatever reason find that synthetic wigs are more than suitable. However being able to style the wig and the longer life span of a Human hair wig are very convenient features. The benefits just mentioned are quite important as the need for a wig is ongoing and having to buy a new wig only once each year or so is better than having to go through the whole process of ordering a new synthetic every 3–4 months.

If you decide to buy a Human hair wig, it is often advisable to own two identical wigs so that you can wear one while waiting for the other to dry or finding the time to style it after washing as the whole process can take several hours which we sometimes do not have to spare.

Of course your budget is important and if you cannot afford a Human hair wig then Synthetic wigs provide a more than suitable alternative.

Fashion
If your need for a wig is simply for fashion, then “the sky is the limit” with what you can do and you are not so constrained by style and colour.

Of course you should consider the amount of time you plan to wear your wig as everyday wear will mean that a Synthetic will need to be replaced every 3-4 months – still a cheaper option than spending considerable time and money at your local hairdresser.

Some clients look at having to replace a synthetic wig every 3-4 months as a good excuse to change style and colour more regularly. Given the affordability of Synthetics it does not pose that much of a burden on their finances.

Which Adhesive to I Need to Use?

We have a large range of glues and adhesives designed for different purposes, personal preferences and strength. Different clients will find that some adhesives will suit better than others. The length of time an adhesive will last can also differ between clients depending on what conditions they are wearing the product, conditions of their scalp and hair.

These hair bonding glues are for hair extensions:

Liquid Gold Bonding Glue

This glue comes in a small bottle or tube. It is used to apply hair extension and it is not to be used on your scalp. It is purposely made to apply to your hair and any hair weft/extension that you are adding to your own hair. After applying to both the weft and your hair allow bond to dry for 3 – 5 minutes. Then press the hair together to bond. It will dry clear. Liquid gold should always be applied to clean dry hair. Never apply it to the scalp.

Liquid Gold will stay up to 5 times any other brand. Everyone is different so its difficult to say how long it will last. It should last at least 3 – 4 weeks.

Please Note: You must buy the Liquid Gold Remover to safely remove Liquid Gold Bonding glue. It will not wash out with water. excessive pulling on the hair to remove the glue may cause damage to your hair.

Salon Pro

Salon Pro glue is designed to be used for attaching hair extensions.

It comes in black or white glue. The white glue dries clear but the black glue has the added feature of drying black for people with darker scalp colour or hair. It also protects the hair from fungal infection. It does contain Latex so if you are known to have an allergy its best to use something else like Liquid gold. Salon pro also has a remover specifically designed to remove Salon Pro safely.

The following glues are used to secure wigs:

Lace front Adhesive

Lacefront Lace front adhesive is specially designed to apply a lace front wig. It is safe and easy to remove. Just peel off scalp and the lace wig can be reused without being damaged. If does not contain latex. This is an adhesive that will dry clear.

How to Apply:

1. Clean scalp gently with alcohol on a cotton ball.

2. Apply Liquid Gold adhesive on scalp and let dry for 3 minutes.

3. Press the lace on with fingers.

Liquid Hair Piece Adhesive

This adhesive is designed to adhere wigs and toupees/toppieces to give you confidence that the wig will stay in place. The adhesive is a waterproof and can last up to 3 weeks. You can shower, swim or workout confidently. You must also use the Liquid adhesive remover to remove this product.

Achieving a Realistic Look with your Wig

With the resurgence of wigs as a fashion item wigs are no longer a thing of the past. Wigs are used in fashion, TV shows, Movies and of course for a long list of medical reasons. Most people don’t want to advertise that they are wearing a wig. Here are some dos and don’ts for in wearing a wig.

Do:

Style your wig once you have taken it out of the packet. For example, if it’s human hair you can apply heat with a hair straightener or if the fringe is too long have it shortened by a hairdresser while wearing the wig.

Choose a style that you will be comfortable wearing. For first timers it’s a good idea to go close to your original style so you can get used to wearing a wig.

Try to buy a wig that is fashionable and displays a current style.

Think about going for a Lace front or mono top so the hairline and part look as natural as possible.

Wear a wig that is age appropriate so you feel comfortable and confident in wearing a wig.

Try a ¾ wig which allows you to incorporate some of your own hair and integrate the hairpiece more seamlessly.

Keep you wig on a wig head while you are not wearing it to keep shape. This also gives the wig a chance to air.

Don’t:

Don’t wear an outrageous colour if you don’t want anyone to know you are wearing a wig. Nobody is born with aqua blue hair.

Too much hair can look fake. Buy a wig with enough coverage but not too much that it looks like a wig.

Don’t wear your wig to bed if you can help it. It will tangle and matt more easily if you have slept in a wig.
